It's not as pronounced now but some previous generations had some baaaaaad memories and opinions lingering from WW2. In WW1, Luxembourg was "neutral and unaligned" but generally sympathetic to the german side. So when the germans invaded in WW2 and tried to impose german nationality and language in Luxembourg, that was seen almost as a betrayal.
