and to which eye do I stare at? left or right? or the center in-between? for how long, lock-on until the end of the conversation? is looking away disrespectful? will looking away make me appear weak/weird/ridiculous/dangerous?
on the other hand, in east asia, looking directly and continuously into the eyes is rude but looking at directions other than towards the person is also rude, it's taken as "I don't care what you are blabbering". so I gotta just kind of look at their face. but never fixated on any particular spot, that will also be taken as provocative. so I gotta fucking cycle through their glabella, nose, mouth, hands, the background behind them, and occasionally just very briefly look at their eyes because completely avoiding any eye contact at all is also taken as rude and awkward. but I don't want to see their hairy nose, their spotty trypophobic skin, yellow teeth with visible spit ropes. I don't want to look anywhere downer than their face, it makes me feel lowly and subservient, degrading.
