I physically can't smile due to having a stroke. I have facial paralysis which mostly affects my mouth. If I smile my face will twitch and droop and I will lose control of my facial muscles. Everyone is calling me cranky because I don't smile or laugh and even when I explain the problem they think it's too absurd or specific to be real. I should be in Eastern Europe

He's probably from California or west coast where your entire social existence is bleeting out useless platitudes and cozying up to people that you think can help you advance in your life. In the rest of the country it's moderately literal. Even in NYC where things are fast paced and people are rushing a quick "how ya doing" results in someone giving an actual answer "wife's a whore, kids killing me but I'm alive" - "ah well fuckit". Nobody cares but is a genuine interaction even if it lasts 5 seconds. In slower parts of the country they will literally stare at you till you give them an answer and you're supposed ask back. Only on the west coast do people say "how are you" "good" "how are you" "good" like while smiling like robots.
