The Church lost its same degree of political influence so there's no real incentive for the rich to send their kids off to join the clergy. Harder and harder to take its institutions seriously as a result.

Church used to be the source of all academic knowledge. From basic literacy to architecture to medicine. Monks and bishops were everything from political advisors to surgeons. In the practical sense, religion was secondary in importance to the church role in society.

Its not that people lost their faith, I would wager the number of true believers are the same as in any other time. Religion was in first hand a control system. Everything went through the local church, from taxes to education to marriage to social activities.

The rulers got better tools than Christianity and moved on. Those tools being nationalism then modernism(really marxism).

So the religion is not in danger of dying, its just not forced upon everyone anymore.

Yes religion is stupid but it holds us all to a certain standard when properly followed the prevents exactly that kind of degeneracy.
