isn't it kinda weird how after WW2, axis soldiers were just allowed to move here? that would never happen today, they'd get denied for terrorism or something

I believe the "holocaust" and "Nazi evil" narratives only took off much later after the war as Jewish people begin to gain considerably power in media and literature. US used to have a Nazi party back then just before the war

No, that wouldn't be the case today. This is because the Nazi state was completely annihilated, and the official successor state -as far as the US was concerned- was our ally. The BDR aka West Germany even had a space program with us and was the last successful Challenger mission.

*or rather, -is- our ally still but instead of BDR it's just "Germany" now. But I think most Germans would prefer if they were split again, because East Germany doesn't contribute anything besides Russian politics and media.

The Holocaust became more of a symbol of 'peak evil' over time as the US built a narrative around WW2 being the founding myth of modern society.

War between nations is different than counterinsurgence or war on terrorism
The first, when it ends, it ends. In Europe it was fairly normal for countries to go to war every year or so, and then once the thing was over people would go back to their normal lives

WW2 of course was different in the scale of sheer destruction and loss of human lives, but I think there's a thing in human brain where when such catastrophies happens and end, people just want to forget and go back to their regular lives and put grievances aside, for the sake of survival.
