Does this make any sense at all? What were they thinking?!

仕 = shi/tsuka(eru), to serve
事 = koto/goto, thing, matter
仕事 = shigoto, work
置 = o(ku)/chi, to place, to put
仕置 = shioki, punish, discipline
必 = hitsu/kanara(zu), surely, certainly
要 = you/i(ru), to need, to require
必要 = hitsuyou, necessity, need
当 = tou/a(taru), a(teru), to hit, to be right
本当 = hontou, truth, really

Because they want to watch anime without subs. They want to read manga without translations. They want to know what "iku iku ikuuuu" means. They want to travel to Japan and krempi a Japanese girl. That's why. Not because of the merit of the writing system, but in spite of it.

Most people do because of your cultural exports. Personally, I find the strangeness of the writing system alluring, and that's the main reason I've spent 4 years on it. Never change it, or if you do, come up with an original system like the Koreans did. Don't copy the Vietnamese

>not compatible with their language
How so?
The main reason for the confusion between different readings is not any supposed incompatibility, but the fact that Japanese had an established vocabulary and then started loaning a shit ton of words from Chinese. The same thing happened with English starting out as a Germanic language and borrowing from Latin / Norse / French. The Norse words in particular are interesting, since they wouldn't originally have been written in Latin letters.
Niggas like to shit on Japanese for having several different ways of pronouncing the same same symbol, while overlooking the fact that the same is true for pretty much all letters used by the English language. Or German. Or Italian. Etc

its usually 2 main readings
sure there are kanjis with way more readings and many irregular readings even for simple kanji (like 五 is go but then theres 五月雨 - samidare and 五月蝿い urusai) but you just pick them up naturally like natives do if you interact with the language
its not a big enough problem to warrant a reform but it does cause inconveniences for natives especially for things like names/place names/handwriting

Korean is basically all monosyllabic for native words, so one syllable per character. Also unlike Japan, There are almost no cases where the pronunciation changes depending on what other characters it is combined with... maybe about 3 or 4 characters in total. No purpose at all other than "that's the way we do it". Same with chopsticks. My country abandoned the Arabic-Persian script for the Roman alphabet in the 60s. We also did a major spelling revamp. The Yanks should have forced the Japs to do the same after WWII.
