>girlfriend has started talking about us buying a house one day
>look at real estate prices in my area
>literal crack-houses that have been half-renovated with their roofs caving in: $100k
>in the most dangerous area of my city houses are anywhere from $200k-300k
>shitty suburban cul-de-sac homes are $300k-$400k
>anything in decent condition in small towns outside the city is half a million and up
>in actuality everything will sell for at least 50% more than its listed
Will you ever own a house in your country?

Its cute that Americans think $500k is a lot for a house. You can barely get a condo for that here.

Where do you live? I'm currently in the process of buying a flat, 176k for a two bed detached coach house, no garage sadly. Living on the edge of a city rather than in it makes a big difference in regards to the price.

I think there was some bipartisan legislation to improve first time buying support, limit mass property buyups, and slacken most zoning laws.
But since it's bipartisan, common sense, and popular there's no way in hell it'll pass. Some evil mother fucker with blackrock bucks will stop it.

The state takes whatever is left of your retirement and wealth as payment when you go to those homes so in order to afford anything at all they usually need to sell stuff before going in, otherwise you get a crappy deal from the government.

Here boomers get scammed into a deal where they sign off the house to a total stranger in exchange for being able to live there till they die and getting a shitty monthly stipend well below actual apartment worth.
Once in a while you hear of someone who got their just desserts with the old fart outliving them, but otherwise it's a legal scam so cheap and effective even our current president did it (then he stopped paying gramps anyway and the boomer ended up in a welfare house, the absolute mad lad)

yes, cost me 50k.
just spendt 6k to fix the roof it was the biggest drawback. from experience 3k will give me a new bathroom. i dont see things like paint, floors, insulation, electrical etc to go through it room by room as an actual expence, already done one bedroom. by the time im done in a few years i might have spendt 20k on it and thats still hella cheap for a house that was fully liveable as it was.
i only buy materials through connections and do all work myself or asking said connections to come over for a day.
its how people buildt cheap housing back in the days, you can still do it today only you avoid the bureacracy by renovating an old one.
