Thanks for bringing this up. The atomic bombs sped up US-Japan negotiations to prevent the Soviets from making more gains in the region before Japan surrendered. Thus preventing a Soviet occupation of parts of Japan. If you are Japanese, you should thank Truman for this long term thinking. It's better to be nuked than to be ruled by Russians.
