A political sea change is underway in Japan. Driven by a mix of economic, cultural, and ideological factors, many young Japanese people are growing frustrated with foreigners, and some reasons are genuine: poorly behaved tourists and wealthy foreigners (read: Chinese) involved in real estate speculation and buying up homes.

The number of Japanese zoomers interested in traveling or living abroad has sharply declined, dropping to about 25% compared to around 60% of Japanese millennials. Poor economic outlooks and a weak yen have contributed, but social and environmental factors also play a role: the pandemic pushed Japanese zoomers to rely heavily on the internet for socialization. This caused them to be bombarded with narratives portraying the world as a scary, dangerous place, and Japan as the only decent, civilized country. At the same time, foreigners in Japan are painted as criminals or parasites exploiting the social welfare system without contributing. These narratives are spread without evidence and often conflate issues caused by transient tourists with those involving long-term residents or naturalized citizens.

These dubious narratives, along with dissatisfaction over declining economic prospects, are shaping young people's voting choices as they seek to blame something tangible for rocketing food costs, property prices, a cheap yen, poorer career prospects, difficulty starting a family, and the dimming of Japan's "soft power" star.

The problem is, when Japanese government eventually drops the hammer, and starts doing things like banning foreigners from owning homes, I doubt their politicians are perceptive enough to distinguish between Chinese real estate speculators hiding wealth from their government while depriving Japanese families of homes, and foreign families who have lived in and contributed to Japan for decades.

Even South East Asia and Africa now have declining birthrates, so they will not export immigrants in the future.
So the only thing that can be done by immigration policy is to slow down economic decline
