It's not much more complex than there being a persistent belief in some acts are justified in defense of islam (as lying) and there being plenty of verses and hadiths about lying being forgiven by allah (judges not by your words but by your heart) all the way to the islamic rule that it is better to lie about a past sin you have committed and repented for than to speak about it to another (since allah has already concealed it). Islam even permits lying to your wife/husband for the purpose of "making peace".

When lying has so many instances of being "ok", it's not bizarre that some people revert to lying without thinking.

Thing is Christianity had the mass slaughter of Christians at the start, often extremely cruelly so by the Romans (like being tossed to the lions) and lying was still condemned - hence Christian martyrdom. So I can't exactly agree with it - not to mention much of the muslim persecution wasn't really that, rather Moe instigating and launching attacks then getting retaliation and crying out in pain.
