If NATO mobilises only on the same day as Russia invades the Baltics, then that would be too late to repel the invasion and the Russians would dig in, fortify defences, and defend against a NATO counterattack.

NATO wouldn't "mobilize", there is no plan or infrastructure for this in place. Article 5 doesn't even set clear thresholds for when it should be invoked and what kind of response the partners are supposed to provide, it was always vague because back in the cold war the US had an army group in Europe and they didn't have to worry whether the others would do as they say.

That's their expected gameplan, yes, start with something marginal that gets everyone debating whether Article 5 applies or not to basically dissolve the alliance, then finish the job.

sanctions have diminishing returns. at this point it's hard to do any more. the point is that if you can get Estonia or Latvia to invoke article 5 over something that the vast majority of NATO won't want to get involved in, you can break up the alliance in preparation for future operations.

NATO has applied has many sanctions as they can on Russia at this point, direct trade between them is effectively zero, which is why Trump wants to tariff China and India for trading with Russia but that won't be effective.
