Not really exceptional. They bought slaves but they never shipped out slaves due to lack of proximity to a population source to draw them from in a sustainable flow.

So all the slaves they had shipped in came from a source further down south in Mozambique. There was a sizable maroon state down in southern Somali who were able to form a bulwark against kidnapping escapees and form protections groups and formed trading networks with surrounding groups and other Somali's but the Italians decapitated their leader and they basically got turned to slaves for private plantation ventures in Italian Somalia up until word reached Italy and uproar developed. The colony switched their status to "bonded plantation serf".
