He has probably one of the craziest life stories I've ever heard of. But I don't like people portraying him as any kind of good guy going against Putin. He was just as much for the war as anyone else there, he just wanted to take control himself. Just standard Russian backstabbing powergames.

Random russiano unc who owned this brutal mercenary company and actually went to battlefields alongside his employees got dissatisfied with the way the russian high command and putin are running the war he was hired to fight on, starts a march towards moscow to depose putin, get convinced by putin to fly to moscow to settle it with a peace talk, dies.
Apparently he was very charismatic and truly patriotic and sounded like a common russian with humble origins and that made people like him, but I can't speak russiano so I don't know.
