Does this happen in your country? This is a common occurrence in Austria.

Yes, happened not too long ago to a building part of my family used to own but sold. They turned it into soulless airbnb. Pretty sure they're in violation of some laws regarding old faรงades.

no, we're still backwards and 30 years behind western Europe (as usual) in regards to our approach to architecture, here buildings like that on the left are sadly still gradually renovated (for huge money) rather than being torn down and replaced with affordable, modern housing with all necessary in 21st century amenities like elevators or underground garages.

yes, buildings on the left reminds me of an savage past that should be erased in Europe.

why would you want tourists? they only bring chaos, mess, pollution and tourism-related jobs have the lowest profit margins, often being more of an economic burden than a benefit for the country.

A country like Austria would certainly gain more from radically decreasing the number of visitors. They can redirect them to poor countries like Poland which still need even low-margin jobs and have so few tourists so even tripling their number won't really affect them.

Here buildings built before 1950 have special status and you can only charge low rent, like up to 600 Euros, so every excuse and loophole gets used to tear them down and replace them with some ugly cube so you can charge 1400 Euros rent or sell it to some chink or gulf investor that won't use it anyway

It happens still alot. But the 60s - 80s were the worst years in terms of archtictural preservation. It was much worse back then.

Nowadays you study engineering in a way to preserve old pieces like these. It's common to build old looking buildings from scratch in most cities. Old architecture simply looked better and is more livible. It has a psychological effect on humans.

Pic related is build from scratch. In the 60s this was a parking place.

This is actually a big misconception. Most modern constructions are actually more expensive than classical ones. Some modern museums cost 10 times the money than just re-creating a classical counter part. (but this way the architect can't collect as much fame, as it doesn't stand out too much)

I knew a very very rich guy in NYC who had to pay the price of a house in queens to get the decorative facade on the side of his building redone because he wasn't allowed to remove them and there were supposedly only a half dozen or so guys left with the ability to work on the type of stone it was.

I also know a person who got paid handsomely to spend six months putting together a 100 page presentation to the preservation board requesting permission to replace an (admittedly fairly well known) neon light fixture with an identical LED fixture.

I'm all for SOVL and everything but at some point you gotta let shit go or at least be willing to compromise
