Finland (and most of Sweden) is pretty much 100% forests and lakes (so more moisture for the mushrooms), it would take an absurd amount of people to harvest all the mushrooms every year, especially when the best spots can be harvested weekly during the best seasons. But western Europe is massively deforested and urbanized compared to us so I can believe that is the case there.

BUT after the war soviet supervisory commission demanded that they be returned to USSR as POWs.

Kekkonen was not yet in power when all of this happened, the returns were orchestrated by red state police and hindered by white finns in the military and elsewhere.

I'm not sure on the numbers how many avoided that fate, but those who were returned to USSR got gulag'd for 10-25 years. Many of them died there.
In 2011, 180 of them were still alive in Finland.

In Poland you cannot even just swim in a random lake/river.
