It's very fake. It's an oligarchy with elements of representative democracy and zero direct democracy. The end result is that the people have very little power, but that element of representative democracy is what people are pointing to and saying "look you voted for it". Of course that's bs but many people buy it.

The core problem is that the state is too big and there isn't any direct democracy. You need a lot of direct democracy and a smaller state so that people can have more insight into what's going on and take informed decisions.

The media is another problem. It's all either controlled by the government or by a small number of people with the same values. There needs to be more direct non-opinion based information about what's going on that goes directly to the people. People should also be forced to read about it and vote on it (and get paid to do so).

A lot more could be said, but the system is broken to the core and we don't actually live in a democracy.
