We went on a urban highway building spree in the 60's and 70's but don't really do that much anymore. We probably couldn't even if we wanted to, any new urban highway would get NEPA'd

Most of our problems today with urban planning is over-regulation on land use.

Unironically, what is wrong with building more lanes to relieve congestion
>induced demand

the population of an economically healthy city continues to grow, so you will have to just build another lane in a few years, seizing another few dozen houses with eminent domain. roads effectively have a scaling limit with highly diminishing returns, especially if its an urban centre with regular intersections and exits

traffic is caused by the choke points. You can’t build six lanes at every single exit because there simply isn’t enough space, and you need to account for the exits interfacing with street traffic (stoplights/signs/rotaries)

induced demand is a reddit brained phrase they throw out instead of thinking. nobody runs out to buy a car because there's less traffic. more lanes doesnt necessarily help traffic thoughever, it will still be limited by the rest of the network and the interchanges/connections.

slowdown is almost exclusively caused by bottlenecks which only get worse with more lanes

>induced demand is a reddit brained phrase
true, the bigger problem is not the induction of new traffic, but the bundling of traffic that is already there
even if the capacity of the city highway is enough, it will flood the subsequent road network

pretty good.
i mean they suck from my perspective as a driver but the city saying
>get fucked you cant drive here
is effective. cant get gongestion on a street closed for cars. obviously somali and boomer female bus drivers manage to do so anyway..

not exactly. many smaller canadian cities see higher rates of transit use and walkability than american cities 5x the size. but yeah compared to europe you seem american.
