Why do ESLs consume English language media, internet and literature more than their native languages?

Most of the media produced in my country is not targeted to my generation. I'm not going to sit and watch some historical soap opera for grandmas. That said most of the English speaking shows or films I watch are at least from the 2000s or older. As for the internet, it's a mix. I do not consume any literature in English.

But like the other Spanish anon said, I consume more Japanese media.

I was actually thinking of that as I typed it kek. But compare it to shows like American shows, why would a kid ever choose to watch Horrid Henry over Spongebob or Adventure Time? English shows were just worse in every way. Live action sitcoms too, wouldn't catch me dead watching any of the slop shown on CBBC but I'd watch hours of Disney and so would all of the kids in my classes.

Maybe it's a generational thing. But I grew up watching cartoons that were mostly made in the 80s and early-mid 90s. British ones were crudely drawn and animated, but had some kind of substance. The American ones were basically elaborate toy commercials.

I'm a zoomer and grew up late 2000s/early 2010s so all of the 'good' British cartoons like Danger Mouse had long been off the air. As you said even as a kid the crudeness and poor animation of our native cartoons was apparent while American ones looked better, were snappier and the benefit to them being toy commercials was that everyone talked about them and played with the toys. I think France makes a lot of good cartoons, I don't know why we didn't follow in their footsteps.

I see your point. But America has always been in a position where they can throw more money at a thing to make it look better than it actually is. Just look at their movie industry: Everything looks amazing. High budget special effects, only hiring the best looking actors, but what are they actually churning out? Absolute shit.

simply because of the sheer amount of english content there is you can almost always find a better english alternative to whatever media you wanted to consume in your native language. you would never go to a tiny corner store instead of a giant mall if they were equally accessible, so the same prices and distance. as long as they can speak english they have no reason to consume media in any other language. and over time they can become even more comfortable with english than their native language. i speak turkish for around an hour a day and consume all my media in english for the rest of the day, which further encourages you to consume content in english. few days ago i went out of my way to pay three times the price for a book because i wanted the imported english version because i can read more fluently in english.

most countries aren't spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year on making media
the US is an exception, your media dwarfs the rest of the world in scale and quality, japan is a distant second and everyone else is totally irrelevant
sure a lot of modern american media is embarrassing slop but things aren't much better elsewhere
the same goes for alternative low budget media, english being the lingua franca means english media dominates as well, things like youtube, etc.

Because French culture is dog shit. It's very limited and also very arabized. Everything feels like it comes from the same source and always includes the same people. French culture is extremely small and the only innovation comes from American influence.

I really don't like French culture and generally avoid it. It's extremely unpleasant.

The only relevant French music is literally based on American music and is heavily American in aesthetics. Look at all the famous French musicians: Daft Punk, Justice, Carpenter Brut, M83, David Guetta (i know he's nafri-belgian but still)

It doesn't matter anyway because by far the biggest musicians here are all Arabs and Africans making rap music. The most popular actual French musician in France is a wigger Arab gangster wannabe (JUL)

Because half of the cool and diverse forms of media (comics, animated shows, live action shows, video games, movies, music) is from the anglosphere. The other half being jap. These are the only 2 territories who developed a strong culture for entertainment media. The rest of the world basically produces jack shit. You have some good indie shit here and there, like some french comics or the occasional underdog video game from places like eastern europe or SEA, but that's about it.
