Hijab is only to be worn by free muslim women of high status historically speaking. Concubines were never allowed to be veiled and it wasn't mandatory until the caliphate fell and no one understood how sharia laws were going to take form in secular democracies. When the Ayatollah took power everyone to out conservative each other though because the shia couldn't be seen as the most pious and when mecca got raided in 1980 everyone had to kept trying to out piety one another. Modern islam is heavily Christianized as a result of the collapse of global power in islamic countries.
Historically Islam has been a lot more tolerant but modern sects are heavy on the 'die infidel' thing which was historically the christian way. Islam just taxed non-believers.
