They manufacture a lot of those handbags or wallet or bags from luxury brands, many tanners go visit workshops in Guangzhou, you can see knockoffs on the street and they have their own brands too. Leather goods are one of their strong suits but I think they manufacture a lot of clothes too.

Also circled cities have nice raw seafood if you dare eat. Whenever I visit relatives there it’ll always be seafood. I’m kind of glad the young people still speak their language there, makes me ashamed for not speaking it well despite going for language lessons.

The cities I circled speak Teochew, more related to Hokkien, rather than Cantonese.
I’ve spoken English since birth, parents didn’t teach me Teochew since it wasn’t beneficial. I learned Mandarin in School. I can keep a conversation in both, I have difficulty to read/write Chinese. I can only understand Teochew and answer simple conversation/questions.

>innit funny how PRC and ROC both speak the same language out of dozens of chinese dialects

It wasn't by accident. The revolutionaries who overthrew imperial rule in 1911 got together and chose how the new Chinese state would function, and one of their choices was making mandarin the national language. This was a hotly debated subject; for instance Guangdong niggas wanted Cantonese because it's more in line with medieval and ancient Chinese/wasn't a bunch of Manchu loan words, while the north preferred mandarin because it was already being taught and spoken by all the Imperial government officials/soldiers so it would be way easier to disseminate. Both the PRC and the ROC view themselves as the successors/progenitors of the 1911 revolutionaries, so they both have mandarin as their national language, along with many other ironic similarities between the two parties/states.

>>213835849
>Should've gone with Hokkien. isn't that what they speak in Malaysia and Singapore too

That wasn't even in discussion; the creators of the modern Taiwanese state is the KMT, not the Hokkien or Hakkas who were there since the Japanese era, which predated the 1911 revolution. You might as well ask why an Austronesian ooga booga abbo language wasn't chosen as the Taiwanese national language lmao.

What do you think of Mandarin Chinese?

I want to learn European Spanish since I have an uncle who migrated and married in Spain, I heard it’s easy for English speakers, and it opens up opportunity in many countries. I’m comfortable with my Mandarin capability so far, I’ll practice Teochew speaking and Chinese reading whenever I visit China. Realistically for opportunities here, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia is useful too.

Cantonese is okay and iconic in chinese movies, but I prefer how languages like Shanghainese sound.

What languages do you speak? Do you intend on learning more?
