>>213833565>innit funny how PRC and ROC both speak the same language out of dozens of chinese dialectsIt wasn't by accident. The revolutionaries who overthrew imperial rule in 1911 got together and chose how the new Chinese state would function, and one of their choices was making mandarin the national language. This was a hotly debated subject; for instance Guangdong niggas wanted Cantonese because it's more in line with medieval and ancient Chinese/wasn't a bunch of Manchu loan words, while the north preferred mandarin because it was already being taught and spoken by all the Imperial government officials/soldiers so it would be way easier to disseminate. Both the PRC and the ROC view themselves as the successors/progenitors of the 1911 revolutionaries, so they both have mandarin as their national language, along with many other ironic similarities between the two parties/states.
>>213835849>Should've gone with Hokkien. isn't that what they speak in Malaysia and Singapore tooThat wasn't even in discussion; the creators of the modern Taiwanese state is the KMT, not the Hokkien or Hakkas who were there since the Japanese era, which predated the 1911 revolution. You might as well ask why an Austronesian ooga booga abbo language wasn't chosen as the Taiwanese national language lmao.
