There's a common misconception in the west that they popped out of thin air in 2008 but they were actually autonomous regions of Georgian SSR and then fought in a civil war against Tbilisi with Russian support.
Anyway, Abkhazia is more "proper" of the two, they have something of an economy, mostly fruit picking and tourism from Russia. Almost all of their trade and transport is via Russia and people have Russian passports, use Rubles and a high % od their budget depends on aid from Moscow. Russia is also building a naval base there.
South Ossetia I'm less familiar with, but it's a landlocked barrid region with 0 economic activity and is essentially another Russian republic like Ingushetia, Karachay-Cherkessia or North Ossetia. Their only road goes through a mountain to Russia and they wouldn't exist if not for direct Russian support.
