The Anglo-German rivalry arose towards the end of the 19th century as a function of the rising military and manufacturing power of the Prussians/North Germans, and fears of a general Germanic empire incorporating Austria and the as-yet independent principalities were quite common in the British governments of the time.

Hardly 'eternal', though -- it hadn't been long since Britain had lost Hanover to the Prussians, and famously Britain had previously worked very closely with Prussia in the Seven Years War and Napoleonic Wars.
