They weren't that different from your average backward, ruthless centralized empire that rules with an iron fist, like it happened many, many times in the history of humanity.
The shit part about Turks is that they annexed and ruled over a part of Europe exactly during the time where Europe was experiencing all those economic and social changes that would make Europe the powerhouse that was during the whole 1500 - end of WW2 period. All of Eastern Europe and much of central Europe as a result were cut off from it (Renaissance, industrial revolutions, and so on) and now we can still see some effects today.

A few years back I used to hang out with this guy who was dating a danish girl and he told me this. At the time I kinda thought he was full of shit and that no way some scandi country like denmark would be so overtly racist, or that they would care about Turks enough to make a slur about them.
