A very large number of British men have naturally reddish beards (it's a documented phenomenon) but they'll rarely grow them out long enough so that it actually becomes visible. So when these converts grow out their beards so long that the red becomes obvious and cover their (probably brown) hair with a skullcap it appears that many of them are gingers.
