IIRC they did this because the houses were so small that they couldn't afford to cram the fireplace inside. Obviously it's less energy efficient, but when you're heating such a small place it doesn't really matter. Winters in America aren't that cold anyways.

the living section of the houses is just the front third from the windows to where the chimney is, behind that is the stable for the cows, horses and pigs, the hay barn and the grain threshing floor. there is 3 generations living under one roof, and they used to have huge families and then some farmhands too. reason to build that way was thermal efficiency, needs less wood to heat.

Nordic rustic houses are beautiful and picturesque; they are epic. The German houses are grotesque; they look like wooden masses that clash with the natural surroundings. There is a certain architectural brutalism.

asl, throughout Latin America (in the upper class tourist places) there are too many vulgar imitations of โ€œtraditional German housesโ€; they even build pharmacies, businesses and restaurants with โ€œtraditional Germanโ€ facades. In other words, they build vulgarities of other European vulgarities.
