crazy how slavery was commonplace everywhere during all of human history then in the last 200 years everyone decided to abolish it

There are more slaves today than there were ever in any other time in history. Of course they are way smaller fraction of the population in comparation to other time and places in history.

Thralls weren't slaves. They were landless workers or farmhands, basically the lowest class. They didn't have voting rights because they didn't own any property and they weren't required to go to war.

people became more enlightened but also slavery stopped being economically viable with the advent of certain machines.
some countries needed to be pressured into it though. particularly certain muslim countries.

i'm pretty fucking sure a thralls were slaves. maybe not tier 0 cotton picking cattle with no rights whatsoever, but they were distinctly not free men and could be bought and sold.

I don't think they were bought and sold. (I would like to see a stronger case for this) They had a work contract with a farmer who was responsible for their wellbeing, and they were required to work. But when people invoke slavery you get images of extreme cruelty or mistreatment. If they were slaves then modern people are mega-slaves with basically no rights.

m8 even farmhands (dräng) up to like the 1800's could be exposed to extreme cruelty or mistreatment. the fact that vikings explicitly conducted slave raids isn't proof enough for thralls being slaves? of course they had some level of rights, they could even buy their own freedom in many cases, but it was stil slavery. greek scholar-slaves in rome often had enough authority to beat the noble children they were tutoring, being a slave doesn't have to be a fate worse than death

I only take issue with it because of the extreme negative connotations. If you want to define slaves as simply lower class working people with restricted rights then yeah sure whatever. Man-debt (wergild) is standard compensation for loss of life in Germanic societies, but does it mean they viewed humans as property? It feels like projection from modern people. Also where do you get the idea of exclusive slave raids from?

that's on new world chattel slavery which is tone-setting, but thralldom is slavery
> If you want to define slaves as simply lower class working people with restricted rights then yeah sure whatever.
if you are a slave you are owned, if you are a serf you are tied to the land which is owned by someone else, thralldom encompassed both slavery and serfdom
>Man-debt (wergild) is standard compensation for loss of life in Germanic societies, but does it mean they viewed humans as property?
well no, that's a fine for murder, they're not owned
