So historically speaking, is the reason that Mary got elevated from just a hardly mentioned side character in the Bible to the most important figure in all of Catholicisim, even holier than Jesus, is that Latin America, unlike Europe, doesn't have any local saints of tradition like how Lombardy has Ambrose, Paris has Geneviève, Norway has Olav or Czechia has Václav, so they had to pick a universal one? Or is it that women who have kept their virginity past the age of 13 are so rare there that a woman who hasn't had sex is seen as the most virtuous person in the world?

A women who doesn't have sex is definitely a virtuous one.
Not just a Christian idea, pagans loved virgins too.

Up until modernity, the average Norwegian could tell you far mote about Olav, Sunniva and Hallvard than Maria or even Jesus.

Latinx shitholes are matriarchal simp societies, so thats one thing
In Mexico the intellectual curiosity is BAD, like BAD, very BAD. I would say that the average catholic has never even read 1 full book of the Bible, so their catholic faith is manily fueled by remanents of native american religious practices including the veneration of a mesoamerican goddess who now is called Virgen de Guadalupe. Nobody thinks she is above Jesus. Everybody calls her "our mother" so Id say its more profound and worth of a real psychological analysis than just call it heresy n shiet

The last modern great miracle on earth involved Mary, not Olav, Sunniva or Hallvard.
Maybe that's why.
