Raw total? Maybe. As percentage income, which is what matters? That wildly varies depending on where in Europe and where in USA.

The sun belt metros where a lot of these mixed-use neighborhoods have been built are relatively affordable. The really expensive parts of USA just haven't built very much and have aging housing stock.

It is very efficient to build and actually not bad at all to live in. They all have a pool and a gym for residents.

Building with wood saves a lot of money and spamming a bunch of these is very effective at turning some decrepit part of town into a nice walkable neighborhood.

Not really true/ a massive over-implication. The part blaming oil is certainly not true.

What happened is that mass-suburbanization hollowed out cities, led to financial collapse of many of them, and crime rates soared. So the now-vacant buildings were bulldozed and became parking lots, and the urban highways were sold as 'urban renewal', which would allow cities to be renewed by making it easier to get there from the suburbs, while also clearing slums.
