a few reasons. first of all, it's phonologically clunky. too many long vowels for a noun-phrase to be used with any frequency, especially with that dipthong at the end. too much happening in the back of the throat, plus the stress timing is really awkward.

secondly, "united statian" is morphologically wrong. "statian" is pronounced like "station", and that's what it's going to evoke phonologically. there's no real association with this country and "stations" as an abstract concept, so it really just doesn't work.

here we would say "stater", not only because it's comfortably in a lower-class register by using a germanic suffix, but also because it applies a subtle agentic coloring to the word. both of those aspects underline the importance of industry to our country's culture.

"united stater" still sucks though. we don't really have a reason to use anything other than "american".

In Malay, the US is Amerika Syarikat. Syarikat in an Arabic loan word that means "a corporation". Oddly appropriate. We don't do it for the UAE which we call Emiriyah Arab Bersatu, bersatu meaning united.

The context in which we use "gringo" is a bit different from other latinos.
First, we use gringo to address everyone who isn't brazilian, not just americans.
Second, other latinos often use the term gringo with a negative connotation, but we don't. For us, most of the time gringo is just a neutral term to address foreigners, and sometimes it can even be used in an endearing way.
