Indeed. 1.5 mil total causalties throughout it all, more on Ukrainian side than Russian, mucho mines and artillery. It's really hard to assess casualties due to psy-ops and opsec.
What isn't hard to assess, unfortunately, is organ trade. Ukrainian military and mercs are routinely cut up for organs, as are Russians. Not only it has been ongoing since 2014, it's in high scale now, complete with price lists.
It's so terrible that there's at least one legit psycho that cuts up people alive, including children, without anesthesia.
Ukrainians fucked up Donbassian mentality too much over the years, so the people that resulted from this are ruthless, too.

Other than obvious reasons such as advance slog due to good tech capabilities, unwilingness to take risks on Russian side and play dangerous with their equipment, constant mine field problems, constant drone problems, snipers and artillery, as well as UA war being a sort of controlled test ground for drones, the primary reasons are hard to assess.
Russians very much do have, or at least used to have both good mil strat planners and vets for rookie training, academies are high quality, yet the way war proceeds is fucky, initial assault is at odds with military expertise at least to my dillettante view.

Some say the war is an utter lie, the primary reason is political, and USA, UA, RF and partially EU have an agreement, either mid war or since the start.
Not impossible, historically Russia lost 1st Chechen War this way IIRC, the political leadership just sold out and ruined everything at the last moment. Some others said Putin is being lied to at some level in command chain.
Beyond that I can't say, I never looked deeply into it.
It's a grind, and it seems possible that the actual purpose of the war is either planetary despair increase, controlled chaos in details in the long-term, or outright sacrifices.

But it is fucky. Something critical is amiss, this war is irrational. Something inhuman.

Are you dumb? Do you think a multi-hundred people nation has one face and mind?
Variables are at odds. Industrial capacity is there, missiles are there, willing people in the field at least on troop and up to mid command level are there, etc, but orders go where they go now.
Neither side employs more ruthless tactics, no sharp forays or drastic tactical innovation attempts are made, hold back is in places where it shouldn't be. Some commanders are scummy to troops, but not all, so how is that in spite of all expertise in the field on all sides the war is proceeding as it does?
That is the problem.

Unquestionably. Our forces for some reasons bomb UA industry and facilities sparingly from what I've heard, when logically they should've been blowing it up early, and then attack in detail.

Yes, but there's not a lot of long-range SAMs in Ukraine. Not every missile will result in a splash, imagine if they get detected while firing and get destroyed, that's at least a 3-4 missiles+launch system lost, and what if it was an everyday occasion?

One doesn't build an empire by being weak, no matter what others say.
It's both.
Reputation is partially exaggerated by propaganda as part of usual psych bolstering tactic by dehumanizing enemies, but Russia always had both excellent military pros, really catastrophic fuckups, and extremely tiresome corrupt officials, in military included.
Afghan vets are a phone call away, to put it into perspective. CT forces have actual combat experience pretty much all the time, FSB analytics are perpetually busy too. There's no particular shortage of personnel between branches.

One general was imprisoned for 1 billion rubles bribe, also to put it into perspective (think how many tens or hundreds of billions must actual crime sphere utilize if multi-million checks are a mere throwaways). SMO fund asks people to donate 1mil to buy equipment packs. Naturally they do, being compatriots. SMO fund gets it honestly done.
But that one bribe? Yeah. You can fund a lot with it. But it's just a bribe. With all the implications.
Polities like Russia, USA, British Empire, they cannot be easily destroyed by outside means. So the battle shifts within, and it's so very hard to battle corruption with your hands tied.
