Rap in kpop is the funniest shit. Western rap is already so performative, we have multi millionaires larping as hitmen and drug kingpins while they live in gated communities.
Kpop executives saw how popular rap was and aimed to copy it, but had to put a sanitized Korean spin on it in order to not be blacklisted by mainstream Korean society. The result is literally every K-pop attempt at rap sounding identical, repeating the same 2-3 themes they’re legally allowed to rap about. It’s a fake copy of something that was already fake.

Boy groups have generally generic songs compared to girl groups, and they tend to have shitty rap parts. Many songs are composed in a way that ignores the natural organic flow of the piece, just to fit in a member who does this kind of part. And they tend to have cringe lyrics, as a Korean. It's really hard to find a single Korean men who listen to BTS in their normal life.

I’m not referring to the vocals. I’m talking about the music style, structure, and flow. It seems like girl groups in South Korea tend to have more experimental music compared to boy groups. Maybe I'm biased since I’m into electronic music, hyperpops and its subgenres. And I don't like the aesthetics of the boy clothes in general because they have large, thick, cosmetic makeups. Yeah, I don't like it.

I'm in South Korea so I'm forced listen to all the K-pop songs in every part of the shop and stores or similar places for decades.

I'm sure we are destined to have drastically different taste as we exposed to drastically different norms in the music industry. It feels like my country's music industry is all but non-existent at the moment as every popular musician is stuck in a loop of making songs made for tiktok or instagram and smaller artists are lost in the algorithm or a massive of sea that is spotify/soundcloud.

As a South Korean living in South Korea for decades, it's really easy to see the random lives of K-pop idols, like in a University. And sometimes it was disappointing, because they put so much effort in visuals in their music videos that can't be copied in their performances.

LA alone has a more impact on the global music industry than South Korea. If they want to, they can sing in their houses and play instruments in their home because each house has their own space.
