The notion that the US subsidized EU defence and therefore european countries could build welfare systems is silly.

Also if anything the US has enjoyed a very previliged status in that regard where EU taxmoney goes to the US rather than the opposite. As for american bases they are in no small part paid for by the host country. The sad reality is simply that the american healthcare system is comparatively very inefficient when it comes to providing healthcare for people in general and the system is so ingrained and insitutionalised that there won't be any large scale change for several decades, if ever. To the detriment of the american populace at large.
