A russian friend told me that for a brief period of time in the 90s, russians were given democracy and freedom after a thousand years of serfdom. They used this freedom to prostitute their children, use hard drugs and sell the entirety of the soviet unions industry for pennies so they could buy vodka.
The elites then decided such a retarded people should never have freedom ever again and returned to totalitarianism with democratic characteristics

It is a genuinely interesting sociological phenomenon. Other republics (especially in caucasus and central asia) had much stronger societal collapses, yet things of this nature never happened. Is there something about the Russians that makes them act like this at the slightest sight of trouble?

This is late Cold War pop mythology. In reality the Yids that led the USSR made a deal with the Yids that led the West whereupon they'd be able to hand over Soviet industry to themselves for scraps, collapse the country to get the top of the Communist Party rich, but it was done with the understanding that the new statelets would all be led in a pro Western direction by said Communist Party originated oligarchs. Obviously in some this panned out, in others it didn't, but I'd say it was definitely a coordinated elitist agreement, nothing to do with democracy - which Europe and the USA don't have either.
