Did Brazil have favelas in the 1800s and 1900s?

No. Favelas began after the War of Canudos.
When the government failed to pay Brazilian combatants as agreed, they began building houses on the hillsides as a form of protest.
Favelas began in 1900, but only intensified with the great migration from rural to urban areas.

People underestimate how much more white South America was at one point in history

Specially Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil

No. Brazil was literally whiter today. After the last major wave of immigration that came precisely from Europe.
In that photo from OP, Brazil was definitely less white.

I wonder what’s gonna happen when all the projects and government housing units becomes too dilapidated for basketball Americans to live in. Many of our ghettos were built prior to the 1970s. Maybe 40 years from now we’ll have our own favelas :)

I physically cannot imagine post-racial macacos building these ornate european style buildings

Favelas are solidly built structures. They are all constructed of brick and cement. A house in a favela is different from what someone outside Brazil might imagine.
There are still houses in the favela in worse condition, but most resemble a regular apartment today.

Architecture is a historical cultural issue, not one of ability.
Anyoney can build something beautiful under technical guidance.

You can't imagine it because you're a racist.
And racists have difficulty dealing with reality when it contradicts their perceptions.
All of this was built by brown people.
Rio de Janeiro has always been one of the blackest cities in Brazil, along with Salvador, because both were capitals.

Have you been to a favela before? Does Rio de Janiero have the worst favelas? How does electricity, plumbing, and internet even work in favelas

Favelados live better than I do. Because I'm a lazy piece of shit.

I've been to a favela in São Paulo.
All of this works because they steal from the central network, so basically they get these services for free.
That's why favelas have all those tangled wires on the poles, which we call "gato".

The government doesn’t try to stop them. Are you ever worried about being mugged, shot, or kidnapped?

Just like today?

Also, São Paulo is by far the best city that truly represents Brazil. Precisely because it went through the 20th century welcoming people from all over Brazil.

It is impossible for Brazil to have been more black at that time for mathematical reasons. Brazil only stopped receiving massive immigration from Europe after World War II.

>mugged, shot, or kidnapped?
Why would anyone do that to me? No one does this kind of thing without a reason.
The government does not control the territory of the favela; criminal organizations do.

Global poorness started in the 70s.
Anonymous Brazil No.213980521

Maybe today, yes. But certainly not until 2000. Brown and black people have always had higher infant mortality rates, higher mortality rates in general, and lower birth rates.
In any case, Brazil is completely mixed today.

On the contrary Der Chikaner, I am saying that Brazil has always been brown. And that it just became whiter than it used to be. I never said that Brazil was or is white, but that it used to be less white and became whiter because it received massive immigration from Europe.
