Chinese born in America looking for a perspective on not being "weird"
I am a Chinese born in America, and my life is pretty boring. I am special needs and autistic. I go to a special school and do things with other special kids. I'm not unhappy or anything, but I feel like I have a limited idea as to what is "normal". My parents are middle class, and I live in a middle-class town, so I will mainly be talking about middle class too, because that's what is "normal".

Here are some things that I feel like "normal" people do. To be clear, I am more talking about in general than specifically people my age, etc. I haven't really spoken to a lot of "normal" people in school. I'd say the most "normal" people I currently interact with on a daily basis would be my teachers. But without further ado, here's the list. Normal people:

1. actually like English class. They sit down and read, and really study, books like Old Mortality by Scott, Song of Myself by Whitman, Manfred by Byron.

2. are at least familiar with classical music; if unable to play at least one instrument (or sing) fluently, they will at least avidly listen to music and have at least a basic familiarity with the repertoire.

3. every now and then, with regularity, dine out at nice restaurants. If they're rich, they get to eat really lavish meals at really luxurious restaurants once in a while. (And if they're really rich, they get to have private chefs, but that's stretching the definition of "normal".) They get to go down to diners in North Carolina and order steak. Since white people don't really have a cuisine, they will eat at Italian restaurants. They will celebrate birthdays, weddings, and holidays at Italian restaurants, maybe even Greek, similar to how Chinese people do so at Cantonese dim sum places. They will order glasses of wine, champagne, or other festive spirits for the occasion.

4. live in houses in the suburbs, or even a rural area, usually not the city.

I have more btw.

5. go to places like Europe for vacation; typically visit at least 3 foreign countries by 18. Or at the very least, have been to a variety of regions of the U.S.

6. go to church on Sundays, and it'll be an actually churchy church, like one with a steeple and an organ where SATB hymns are sung. Even the kids will go to service instead of Sunday school, and everyone will dress nicely, in their "Sunday best". Even if they don't actually go to church often, they will at least make it for the high holidays like Christmas and Easter (hence the crowds on that day), and be Christian at home to at least some degree. (or a synagogue, which I still consider "normal" honestly.)

7. go out to the country every once in a while, for some reason, whether it's to visit relatives who live in the country, pick apples, play golf, do some form of outdoor recreation, or go shopping at farmer's markets.

8. go to some form of college for some time, and use the degree(s) they earned there to get a job, so that they can afford to keep living in the suburbs instead of having to be poor and live in the inner city with all the poor people (and no longer be "normal"... everyone in every city seems to be either really rich or really poor). And unfortunately, some do, I guess. But most of those must've not studied well in school or had otherwise bad habits, so I suppose they might deserve it.

9. have a girlfriend by the time they graduate high school. They may or may not marry, and that's their choice. - own at least one summer house in the mountains and/or on the shore. Maybe some motorboat and/or some ski gear. If not, they definitely wish they did.

10. like to tell folk tales to their children if they're parents, and like to listen to folk tales if they're children themselves.

Hmmm, ok

11. either don't know a foreign language (which is getting more rare these days because most school systems require you to know one in some capacity to even graduate), or know a civilized language like German, Italian, or even Latin or Spanish.

12. watch and/or play at least one sport as a hobby. (Playing is less likely as one ages.)

13. know their history and culture well.

A bit more context on the English thing btw, since I can't think of more:

My relationship with English as a subject is a bit complicated. It might be my worst out of all the "core" subjects, and in fact, my reaction to screwing up in English and/or not wanting to do a lot of the work indirectly led to me getting kicked out of district. However, I honestly have a pretty strong interest in reading and analyzing these books, or even writing some myself, and I often feel dismayed when my local library fails to have copies of some of them. And it's a pretty decent library too. If I could, I would become a writer when I enter college or major in English.

My impression is that people barely read anything these days. Maybe this is skewed because the people you see doing this are studying English as a major, so they would enjoy what they study

No, I don't have a sister. But I've been friends with girls from school who have sort of been like older sisters. What's up?

I think only your third item applies to normal middle class nowadays. Most people don't read and even fewer know anything about classical music.
