I started learning Russian on Duolingo because for a while I was really into Russian doomer music and the tortured Russian soul.
Thankfully the war broke out and cleared my mind so I didn't waste any more time learning Russian.

I have been told that Ukrainian is closer to Polish than Russian.

I swear. I didn't save the picture but it was giving examples of the same sentences in Ukrainian, Polish, Belarusian and Russian. Polish and Belarusian both were more similar to Ukrainian than Russian. Maybe it was NATO propaganda idk.

Ok now I'm confused. I tried searching the archive for the picture but I can't find it. What about Belarusian? Is it like a middle link between Russian and Ukrainian? My favourite part about Swedish is that it means I can also communicate with Norwegians and Danes. It would be nice to learn a language like that for east slavs.

It matters more for native speakers than someone learning as a foreign language, probably learning any of the 3 means you can understand the others since they are all widely used. But for example standard Finnish speakers can understand Meänkieli (spoken in sneeden) and Kven (spoken in Norway) but they might not necessarily understand standard Finnish because it's more "modern" than the others. But the grammar is pretty much the same, so if you learned one of the others for some reason as a foreign language speaker it would be just learning a few extra words

Same, it's easier to just listen to the gibberish and be able to translate the odd old propaganda poster. It's quite sad really, i have no interest in any other language.
The only use for Russian here is for eastern european criminals to be able to communicate in prison.
