I don't understand why Americans use margarine, butter can't be that expensive right?

it started during WWII and it was this awful white waxy crap with a red dye packet that you kneaded into it to make it look yellow. You couldn't get butter due to the war effort. For some reason it caught on in the '50s because it was much easier and cheaper to make and we are a nation of tasteless lardasses.

If it tastes just like butter then there's no problem

My parents refuse to cook with butter because it would make a dish a few cents more expensive. Meanwhile they own two houses, a boat and RV

A lot of American eating habits are a holdover from WW2. A lot of companies switched high-quality ingredients for replacements because of the economical crisis and then they stuck to it because it was cheaper even if the ingredients became affordable again, just to cut costs.

it was a psy op, they said it was healthier and some people still unironically believe this.

during the 1970s-1990s they used predatory marketing and pseud science to make low iq house wives believe that margarine was healthier, even though in reality it was to cut costs

margarine is the most disgusting thing possible, it physically hurts my nose to smell it, it is like smelling amonia to me
