Japan to export first warships since WWII
Recently Japan won the bid against South Korea, Spain and finalist Germany to build and export their cutting-edge Mogami Class stealth frigates to Australia, marking another major milestone in Japan's shift in posture on the international stage.
Thoughts?

Mogami class is good for self defense, not to engage in a war. Thus thats the only thing Japan can make so makes sense that they go all out in that effort.

But please, fuck off to /k/

mogami was a heavy cruiser class in ww2

i have a legitimate concern that stralians will casually cancel them at some point of some reason.

Do they discuss ships on that board...? I thought it was about guns 'n' stuff
>>214050265
Interesting, I had already seen that they're reusing other names from the IJN for some reason
>>214050341
Is that even a possibility at this point...?

jgsdf was designed as an organization completely unrelated to the army, but the jmsdf has inherited the traditions of the navy.

the japanese love their naval history, it's like sacred to them

the mogami was in the most famous japanese naval defeats in ww2, she was at midway, philipine sea, and leyte gulf, finally was attacked and sunk in the battle of surigao straight

I'd have preferred the German bid to win ofc, but from all the other contenders, the Japanese is my favorite. The Mogami is cool and Japan is not a big arms exporter yet.

The ship has full size VLS cells that can fit land attack cruise missiles too.

I wouldn't worry too much. The only other option they would reasonably trust is germany.

I'm no expert on this sort of thing, but the other countries proposals either looked too old fashioned or clumsily to the point that they didn't even give the impression of being seriously designed let alone proposing any innovation. I think the Japanese one (or maybe German one for secondary choice) were probably the only serious candidates from the start.

It's not just that. The other two (spain/korea) can't/shouldn't be trusted from their perspective. Their primary national security concern is resisting china and both of them have shown tendencies to be sympathetic

Yeah, maybe. There should be a lot of political thinking involved, but even the German ships, which seem to be the better of the remaining candidates, don't appear to offer any particular technological innovations. Unorganized masts, not enough efforts to reduce personnel, etc.

I'm as rabidly anti-China and unironic China decline fan as one can possibly be, but that single picture is so fucking overused in all that slop content I'd otherwise fundamentally align with that it's become a marker of cringe to me

Watch America cockblock the deal and force Australia to purchase American battleships, instead, just like what happened with the Australia France nuclear submarine deal
