I alternate between male and female characters because I feel like some genders match better with certain classes. For example, I could never play a female martial class, because that's just silly. I like to play female spellcasters though (particularly sorcerers, since they have high charisma and you can often play an evil, femme fatale kind of character).

depends on the game, if it's an RPG with a very involved story and romance I'll make a guy if it's something a bit more action packed where it doesn't matter as much I can make both guys and gals depends on what I feel like at the moment
as for race(if the game allows) I'll usually pick elves, they're pretty cool
