I read from a German on a forum commenting on this news that pickpocketing happens only in the poor, backwards parts of Europe like Italy, were crime is rampant and social norms are lax, that's why.
We are used to it and are criminals ourselves, richer Euros on the other hand aren't used to criminal activities, Americans while rich have experience with criminals, so they are prepared.
