Because he gets told to do that by his court appointed defense attorney. And if he refuses the attorney says "you're on your own" and won't defend him, and he gets hit with the longer sentence.
And that particular issue isn't even a problem for this nationalist stuff. Let's say the cops charge you with "public obscenity" because you called one of them a pig. Defense attorney will play the same game. You're better off defending yourself.
