Its not about material choices, it's about the design, shape and most importantly - scale, although yes concrete and glass siding is ugly.
The problem with modernist design is that they don't adhere to any framework or template, in fact the lack of a template is what usually makes modernism what it is. They like to add an odd number of or different sized windows etc, there's no rhyme or reason to it and that's why they don't look appealing to anyone other than other modernists.
Huge structures should be reserved for monuments or landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or cathedrals or other public spaces like the US Congress building.
Having 100 story skyscrapers is unnecessary and only serves to make a city feel inhospitable for humans.
3-4 stories is all you need as long as you have a competent urban planner.
