Cromwell explicitly rejected an offer from parliament to become king stating that God had already destroyed the monarchy and that he would not “build Jericho again”. He tried a variety of different systems from constitutional monarchism, to the parliamentary oligarchy, to a theocratic council, to a land owning democracy, to military rule, before finally essentially making himself a dictator. the english just wanted a parliamentary monarchy and charles was so hellbent on seizing absolute tyrannical authority that he was willing to bring over a foreign army to try to bring the native english to heel.
parliament and the common rustic folk weren't even really keen on seeing charles executed, it was the Army who demanded it, the warriors of england adored cromwell and thought him a brave, effective, Godly man and saw charles as a spineless traitor.
