How come Japan and Korea have more tv and movie exports than all of Europe combined? Why is it so hard for Europeans to appeal to the global market? You would think being so culturally similar to the USA it would be easier but they have no influence at all outside of their own borders

I asked this yesterday too but I am asking again because I am curious

Maybe being so culturally similar to the USA makes it harder? If you are going to watch a western piece of media with western social norms and morality, why would you watch a European one which would have a much, MUCH smaller budget over an American version with much higher production values?

it's strange that germany has basically zero soft power. nobody gives a singular fuck about german music or tv shows or movies.

the only good thing to ever come out of germany was babylon berlin

But the economic and cultural benefits of having media exports is surely enough for European divestments to try, right? Just to of how much tourism and soft power the UK got after Harry Potter became a big hit

Why should they appeal to anyone at all?
Media culture isn't obligated to be a product or a info wars tool.

Honestly, the biggest wasted opportunity post WW2 was not developing a native major studio of our own, we have the right language and masses of talent but all our people just have to go to Hollywood or bizarrely stay working here with American money. We could have been a little European media centre which attractive talent from across the continent but our cunt leadership just said 'nah let le free market sort it all out. We should do what Korea does to subsidise and support it's own industry.

Unions. You can't do anything without people demanding for more quality and constant revision. Japan and Korea just overfund the industry itself, pay everyone like shit, and spam samey media maybe dropping one quality production every year or so. It's amazing when you talk about how trash anime is now then someone says 'yes but this one show from 40 years ago proves you wrong'. For some reason the media is so similar that it all blends together, because I can't imagine someone from the US ever getting away with 'yes movies are shit now, but do you remember Clockwork Orange?'.

British shows have like 8 episodes with seasons sporadically announced every 5 years. Actually American TV is like that too now. We used to get 20 episodes of TV a year
Anonymous United Kingdom No.214122769 >>214123159
>>214122678
Because British tv shows are made for the 60 something million people in the UK with a tiny budget and are usually written by one or two people.

America's domestic market is so much huger it budgets are larger too, in fact now I'm thinking maybe the fact to get a hit USA wide it has to be more 'broader' to appeal to all the diverse cultures within the USA it helps it appeal more internationally? There might be something to that, USA has massive regional cultures but are there regional movies or shows?
Anonymous United States No.214123159

>regional shows
Not really. Most shows have broad American appeal. The location barely matters half the time

The UK produces a lot of media.
Its just that is so americanized and your culture is so americanized that it might as well be produced in california or massachussets.

I have read anglos repeating the "country of inmigeants" american bit lmao.

Japan is only popular in the world with anime and manga, and many authors don't even seem to like it that much, at least they don't make much thinking about export.
Korea exports dramas and kpop, their main market is more the rest of asia than the west, and it's relatively recent phenomenon. It started less then 20 years ago.
Europe has a lot of national productions, but they are rarely popular even among other euro nations.
Anonymous South Korea No.214128258
Being culturally similar to America just means nobody needs you. Why watch the discount knock off version from Europe when the US does the same thing with a 10x budget?
