The internet became more widespread. Third world countries are extremely racist.
Our western concept of "racism" is something that arose due to our superior technological and industrial development. The idea that racism is a bad thing that needs to be stamped out was created by the corporate elite as they began to import cheap foreign labor. Obviously this was going to create resentment amongst the native populations in the west, so they (the elites) needed to invent a tool that would silence any backlash. You don't have this in third world countries because they themselves are the cheap labor, there's no reason to try to control their speech because no one is moving there to steal they jobs. So as a result there's no social risk to being openly racist, they just say whatever they think.

Democracy is a scale. I would say that Switzerland is somewhat close to a democracy now. At the end of the day I would say that democracy is about a people's ability to decide over their own future while not being subjects of foreign propaganda. Their will should be directly reflected in the political decisions. And that is far from being the case in the modern west. The people have some power but it's very limited and that has been the case for a long time.

I could say more about this. For example: who should be the "people". Should 10 year olds be part of the "people" who decide? Should women? Should foreigners? Etc. But I'll leave it at that.
