French is an outlier, but you still can understand some with greater effort.
I traveled for several weeks in Spain and Italy, I spoke slowly and avoided using nasal sounds and other portuguese sounds that are more complex, i managed to get by very well without needing to speak a word of English.
I never studied formally spanish, catalan, italian, galician, etc.

Romanian is probably like French, you can identify words here and there, but they aren't intelligible like the others.
