>strangers from across the sea land on your shore
>they call themselves "conquerors"
>you don't immediately kill every single one of them

Was this the Mesoamericans' greatest misstep?

People don´t know but Spaniards had to defeat the txacalans in 3 cruenty battles before they decided to go along the Spaniards in defeating the Mexicas. In one of the battles Cortes almost died.

So, Spaniards not only had to defeat the Mexicas but also their "allies" the txacalans first.

Mesoamericans weren’t a unified nation. The non-Mayan areas were vassals to Aztecs and switched loyalty the moment shit went south. The Maya civilization had been in the equivalent of dark ages since the 10th century. The stopped using the Long Count calendar for example. There was never any central authority in the Mayan lands anyway; it was always a bunch of warring city-states.

their problem is they didn't have advanced weapons like rifles or cannons. they used bows and spears against flamenco reggaeton listeners. they were also not a unified state. just bunch of different tribes fighting with each other.
