The military had been trying to coup João Goulart as soon as the previous president had resigned. It's true though that they only managed to successfully coup after they gained logistic and diplomatic support from the US, but the movement was 100% internal and the US was misled into helping them for actual no good reason to American interests. It turns out the CIA is very incompetent and easy to fool, they will help you out if you just claim your adversary is communist or something.

The military dictatorship not only did not privatize government monopolies but also created new state-owned companies, intensified protectionism, started building a nuke, pursued a non-aligned foreign policy approaching the PRC, supported Argentina in the Falklands War among other things that didn't help American interests at all other than torturing some literallywho communists who only started their activity the military coup itself.
