Having swum in both Mediterranean and Atlantic beaches, I can confidently say that the Atlantic is incredibly cold.
Add to that, the constant gigantic waves are also a nuisance, unless you are into surfing.

As for sands, it depends. I've been to some beaches in the Mediterranean that are basically more shell pieces than sand, and I have been to some that are magically flat and beautiful.
