There was a show called Whoopi about Whoopi Goldberg running a hotel I think and the lost media I'm looking for is a 9/11 cold open to it where she walks into the lobby and says "do you hear that?" and then it smash cuts to 9/11 footage. But I think it's a notable feature that the narrow windows and grid architecture look like a mesh screen at a distance, which is pretty unique even today. Also architectural uniformity is an unrealistic meme.

It was a meme. The video commonly attached to it was just taken from unrelated news footage from the second intifada, and a lot of the details were mixed up with the mossad van story which is similar but not identical. So much 9/11 conspiracy lore is extracted from news reports or internet hearsay from the immediate hours and days after the attacks when things were very confused and tense.

The twin towers were the most economically and politically important office buildings in the world and iconic landmarks of both the city and the country. They were an obvious target and no one was blind to that, even if an attack on the scale of 9/11 seemed astronomical. The fires didn't melt the beams, the impacts did most of the structural damage and the collapse was merely gravity doing its work. The cascading collapse was also not indicative of an implosion, the towers were designed to fall that way in such a catastrophe to minimize collateral damage. You might not think Building 7 took enough debris and fire damage to collapse but looking through the photos it's actually miraculous it didn't fall sooner. the types of activity that intelligence engaged in just massively shifted, mostly because of technology, and when I say less powerful I mean that the actions that Mossad / CIA take now are taken with the explicit knowledge that some day they will be public (or will be public immediately)

think about the Pager operation. in the 70s something like that would've stayed Top Secret for decades, we learned about it after months. Nothing is top secret in the social media era anymore

in the 70s through the 90s (golden age for CIA "cowboys", etc) most intelligence work was a lot more clandestine, with spies actually on the ground collecting intel or conducting some operation. these spies legitimately had a lot of power and leeway to conduct their operations, they were protected by their governments at a high level.

This changed after 2001. Spies were no longer seen as reliable, the entire industry shifted towards mass-scale surveillance and very public opinion pushing operations, like you are talking about in your post.

are they still powerful? sure. I just don't think this paradigm has quite as much power or capability as the old one did. Maybe people are smarter nowadays too. It's a changed world.
